The .au domain space is a vital national resource, and in 1999, as the culmination of efforts since 1995, auDA was formed to manage it.
In December 2000, the Australian Government formally endorsed auDA as the appropriate body to administer the .au domain space. The Government holds reserve powers in relation to domain names under the Telecommunications Act 1997.
In October 2001, ICANN recognised auDA as the suitable operator for .au under a Sponsorship Agreement.
In August 2006 the Minister for Communication, IT and the Arts announced a review into the policy, administrative and regulatory arrangements that underpin the operation of the .au Internet domain.
In November 2006 DCITA sought public comment on a range of issues including the administrative structure of the .au Internet domain, naming structures, policy development, competitiveness and cost effectiveness, international participation and emerging technical issues. DCITA received 19 submissions, which are archived on its website.
auDA has published its response to some of the comments contained in the public submissions.
