auDA AGM 2002 Director Nominations

Candidate Statements

Paul Day - Demand

I feel I have the experience and ideas to make a worthy contribution as a director on the auDA board.

I have been an active Internet user since the mid-90s and hold membership with WAIA, ISOC-AU, the ACS and the IEEE. I currently sit on the WAIA executive board and have previously sat on technical committees at the University of WA.

I have also provided a service to the Australian Internet community over the past few years by operating a small non-profit ISP and the lorikeet.id.au registry, both offering free services to Australian individuals and non-profit organisations.

Kim Heitman - Rep Assoc

EFA was a founder of the auDA Board and has worked to balance privacy and consumer rights against commercial interests. I look forward to representing the class of associations for a further 2-year term. My resume is online at www.kheitman.com/professional/

Cheryl Langdon-Orr - Demand

Brief history of my interest in auDA, the DNS, and Internet.

  1. Own and operate Internet dependent SME(s) with several gTLDs & ccTLDs
  2. Joined:-
    • ISOC (1995) & ISOC-AU (1996), taking ongoing interest in DNS.
    • ICANN as an At Large Member, (and have attended most of the ICANN meetings remotely);
    • auDA in September 1999
  3. Subscribe to various DNS and at-large-discussion lists, and prepared the ISOC-AU (elected as Board Member in 2001) responses to recent Committee on ICANN Evolution and Reform processes.
  4. Served on the New-Names and New-Names Advisory Panels and the Code-of-Practice Drafting Committee.

Cyrille Lefevre - Supply

History has shown that consumers will always be vulnerable to unscrupulous operators. My primary goal as an auDA Director would not be to run endless public awareness campaigns. I would aim to provide legitimate operators with the policies and guidelines that would serve them best, guided in this area by the economic principles of John Nash, that would discourage legitimate operators from unscrupulous practices.

The "if you can't beat them, join them" mentality prevalent in the business practices of many Australian domain name resellers today, I see as the main and most important issue requiring immediate attention by the auDA board.

Michael Malone - Supply

Michael was one of the founding partners of iiNet Limited and is currently Managing Director of the company. Both he and iiNet are based in Perth, Western Australia. Having been involved in the Internet business for close to a decade, Michael has a comprehensive understanding of the Australian Internet industry and is enthusiastically committed to its development. He has maintained a public profile over the years through various industry appointments, including serving several times on the auDA board.

Karl Schaffarczyk - Demand

Karl is a member of auDA, ISOC and the Internet Industry Association. He is a member of auDA's 'New Names' Advisory Panel. Biographical info is at http://www.karl.id.au/

Karl is the proprietor of Inspired Networking, an ISP operating across Australia. He has been involved with the net since the early 1990s. He is well-versed in open source, computer networking technologies and DNS management.

Karl's objectives are to represent all users, balance community and business interests, ensure stable administration and build on auDA's achievements in self-regulation through enhanced policies and practices. His priorities are openness, transparency, integrity and consultation.

Peter Shilling - Supply

Being closely involved in the deregulation of .au this year firstly as a test-bed registrar and now a fully accredited registrar, I have been exposed to and affected by the changes in the industry within which TPP operates.

I see this experience, coupled with a desire to take an active role in the organisation that regulates our industry, good cause to hold a position on the auDA board.

Nick Tate - Rep Assoc

Nick is currently Director, ITS and Director, AUSCERT at the University of Queensland and ahs recently been elected Chair of the Council of Australian University Directors of IT (CAUDIT).

At UQ, he has the responsibility for managing the University's own extensive network and its ISP, UQconnect.

Nick has over 14 years' experience of managing global networks. Prior to joining the University, he was responsible for the management of all global networks for Macquarie Bank and, whilst based in London, he had responsibility for the management of global networks for a number of commercial and investment banks.

Greg Watson - Rep Assoc

Greg has been instrumental in the establishment and achievements of auDA since it's inception. He has shown a resolute commitment to ensuring a fair and equitable DNS in Australia. auDA now faces the task of ensuring that the DNS remains stable and reliable while delivering significant cost savings to consumers. In addition, it is important that auDA be prepared for the rapid changes that characterise the social and technological evolution of the Internet. Finally, Greg's vision for the recently endorsed auDA Foundation, is a unique opportunity to support the development of the Internet for the benefit of the Australian community.

John Webby - Rep Assoc

I have been responsible for all central computer network services and facilities at the University of Melbourne since 1989, including 5 years during which we operated the hub of the Australian component of the internet. I'm currently Director, Systems and IT Infrastructure responsible for networks, central systems' platforms, IT security and telephones.
