auDA conducts audit of org.au registrations
27/Apr/2009
The org.au 2LD is for non-profit purposes. Under auDA policy rules, only the following entities are eligible to register an org.au domain name:
- an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory;
- a political party registered with the Australian Electoral Commission;
- a trade union or other organisation registered under the Workplace Relations Act 1996
- a sporting or special interest club operating in Australia
- a charity operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant’s constitution or other documents of incorporation;
- a non-profit organisation operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant’s constitution or other documents of incorporation.
(Refer to Schedule F of the Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Policy Rules for the Open 2LDs (2008-05) ).
auDA has conducted an audit of all org.au domain names registered between 1 January 2007 and 28 February 2009. The purpose of the audit was to check each registration for compliance with the org.au eligibility criteria listed above.
Of the total 18,103 org.au domain names audited, auDA found that 4,113 (23%) do not comply with the eligibility criteria. The most common reasons for non-compliance are:
- domain name is registered to a commercial entity
- domain name is registered to an individual person
- domain name is registered to an apparently non-existent entity
- domain name registration details are incomplete or unclear.
auDA has instructed all registrars to update or delete their non-compliant org.au registrations by 30 June 2009. Registrars are responsible for notifying their affected customers.
Information for non-compliant org.au registrants
- If you meet the eligibility criteria and your domain name registration is non-compliant due to error – eg. the domain name was incorrectly registered in the name of an employee instead of in the name of the eligible entity – then you must contact your registrar to update the domain name registration details before 30 June. If you do not update your details by 30 June then your domain name will be deleted.
PLEASE NOTE: Updates must be processed by your registrar. auDA cannot update domain name registration details.
- If you do not understand why your domain name is non-compliant, you may contact auDA before 30 June for further information and assistance. If you do not contact auDA before 30 June then your domain name will be deleted.
