From: Simon Sent: Friday, 11 September 2009 5:04 PM To: Jo Lim Subject: Submission to auDA on Domain Renewal, Expiry and Deletion Policy (2006- 07) Importance: High Thanks for the opportunity to provide a submission to the Public Consultation in relation to Domain Renewal, Expiry and Deletion Policy (2006-07) . *Introduction* In 2009 we have seen substantial growth in the domain name industry, largely due to the reforms of existing auDA policy. While its encouraging that auDA is seeking submissions in relation to the Domain Renewal, Expiry and Deletion Policy (2006-07), there is a concern that too much regulation will have a negative impact on the the industry. As such, I would advise auDA to proceed with caution in relation to reviewing this particular policy. * Submission #1* * "Whether the current 30 day pending delete period for expired domain names (ie. where the registrant has not renewed their domain name) is appropriate." The 30 day pending delete period provides a fair and reasonable opportunity for a registrant to renew a domain name. I'd note that some registrars offer an auto-renew service (often at no extra cost), so that domain names do not inadvertently expire. *Submission #2* * "Whether the current “domain purge” procedure (ie. where domain names are purged from the registry at a random time between 10.30am and 5.00pm AEST on the next business day after the pending delete period ends) is effective." The current domain purge procedure appears to be reasonable. However it could be made more effective if the purge time was an exact time, and not a random time. *Submission #3* * "What action (if any) auDA should take in relation to unofficial domain drop lists, and the domain-catching services being provided by some accredited registrars and other industry participants." auDA should take no action in relation to unofficial domain drop lists and domain-catching services. Existing auDA policies address any misuse. For example, the Misspellings Policy. In summary, I'd take this opportunity to highlight that excessive regulation in this industry will interfere with the operation of a free market. Consequently, I'd request that auDA maintain its current level of oversight. Kind regards, Simon Johnson Co-Founder - Domainer Income
