Domain monetisationFrom: Russell, David Sent: Friday, 7 April 2006 8:26 AM To: jo.lim@auda.org.au Subject: Domain monetisation Hi! Domain monetisation is a blight on one of the most important societal revolutions the world has experienced. It should be outlawed - and that is a strong call given one of the underpinnings of the Internet/Web is that it be as free as possible from regulation. However, I believe that registration of a domain name should only be provided to an entity that can demonstrate a substantial, working interest in a particular name. I do not suggest that making such a determination would be always easy as, for example, registration of a company name (as a means of demonstrating 'entitlement' to a domain name) could pose difficulties for many people. However, hoarding of domains is against the public interest and an unfair impediment to free and open markets. David M. Russell
