Jo,

I think there can be no doubt that this policy is now well outdated.

There are more than sufficient alternatives for geographic places, and 
lets face it not all are covered by this restriction.

I want to register martin.com.au I can not as there is some small locale 
in Western Australia with that name so I have martinau.com - a poor 
substitute.

I can think of no reason why this policy should be maintained
