This may follow the release of a set of new geographical 3LDs specifically for communities, such as rockhampton.qld.au. I think the new 3LDs will give communities a great opportunities to market themselves on the net. Certainly, it gives institutions such as Rockhampton City Council an excellent chance of establishing an identifiable electronic identity. An early release of the conventional geographic domain names, such as rockhampton.net or rockhampton.com, would confuse the situation immensely and reduce considerably the value of the new geographical 3LDs which need a fair period of time to establish a familiarity with potential users. In fact, I don't feel it's an overstatement to say the release of the conventional geographic domain names would doom the use of the new 3LDs and their community benefit.
