If I want to register a business or company, the last thing I want to do 
is find the domain name that would apply to that business taken by someone 
else.

Do not bow to pressure. Stand firm.

Establish more sub-domains under the .au domain instead.

Maybe 

    .shop.au
    .biz.au
    .home.au
    .family.au

.family.au would probably be popular - people like me would probably go for 
pearce.family.au :-)

etc.
