Should the restriction on geographic names in com.au and net.au be maintained? If so, why? Answer: There needs to be exceptions to the rule for domain names with geographic names for towns and community, councils. OR 2. Should the restriction on geographic names in com.au and net.au be removed - ie. should people be allowed to register geographic names in com.au and net.au? If so, why? Answer: I believe that it’s very important for domain names with geographical existence to be considered and an option rather then not at all. I believe quite strongly that towns and communities, and councils should have access to these domains. But with care. The reason for care to be taken when allowing registering is, business/individuals can use ‘that’ domain as pure business and no interest in the community, such as advertising and bias means of promoting a business and or service. For example, ‘ newcastle.com.au’ is something that would be great for visitors and the community as a main portal for advertising, trade, information, accommodation and community news etc. But if an owner of that domain wanted to they could just have what they wanted and for example misleading products/services for that town.
