Everyday, my team helps Australian businesses get online and register there domain names. The most commmon complaint is the lack of consistency between .com/.net domains and their Australian counterparts .com.au and net.au. The big question is: 'Why do I need and acn or arbn number to register my domain for .com.au names and why does the domain have to reflect in part or whole my business/company name.'? It's no wonder we trail the USA in getting business people to register there names. Currently it is confusing and frustrating for both ISP's and businesses. Why can we not set a deadline for the current system to end, eg June 2001 and then have a free market like the USA. The Gov't could then push businesses to get in and regsiter their names before June 2001. I ardently believe that this system would not encourage squatters if business in Australia was educated and reminded.
