What is the auDA member transition?

In 2018, auDA’s Constitution was amended to enable a transition period in which auDA would grow and diversify its member base. At the end of this period, members would transition to the new member model, with:

  • Greater member networking, engagement and other member benefits
  • The opportunity to vote on matters related to the administration of auDA, in addition to the opportunity to vote in auDA Board elections
  • Support for auDA’s status as a not-for-profit company limited by a guarantee provided by all members.
When does transition occur/do I have to transition?

auDA hopes all members will consider transitioning to the new member model. Under auDA’s Constitution:

  • Transition must occur on or before 27 September 2022.
  • To transition, members must opt in. Members recently received an email containing a link to the new terms and conditions of .au membership.
  • Members that have not yet transitioned will receive subsequent communications from auDA encouraging them to opt-in to the new terms prior to the September deadline.
Are there additional membership benefits from transition?

As we transition to the new model, auDA’s membership offering is expanding and we look forward to delivering more events, more targeted research and a broader suite of resources to support our members and the digital economy here in Australia. Additional member opportunities include:

  • The opportunity to vote on matters related to the administration of auDA, in addition to the opportunity to vote in auDA Board elections.
  • Support auDA’s status as a not-for-profit company limited by a guarantee provided by all members.

Under auDA’s Constitution, members who do not opt into transition will cease to be members and will not be eligible to receive auDA member benefits after 27 September 2022.

Will .au membership remain free?

Yes, .au membership remains complimentary, auDA’s membership offering is expanding and members will be entitled to access a greater number of member events, networking opportunities and member benefits.

Following the transition, .au members will also have the the opportunity to vote in upcoming auDA Board elections, and on other matters relating to the ongoing administration of auDA. This move will ensure our valued members are supporting auDA’s status as a not-for-profit company limited by a guarantee provided by all members.

Under auDA’s Constitution, members who do not opt into transition will cease to be members and will not be eligible to receive auDA member benefits after 27 September 2022.

What is the member guarantee?

auDA is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. This guarantee is currently provided by auDA’s governing members. auDA’s Constitution requires that from 27 September 2022, this guarantee is to be provided by all members.

Practically this means that, from 27 September 2022, in the unlikely event the organisation enters insolvency, each .au member will be liable to a maximum of $10.00, for any debts owed by auDA.

auDA currently has a strong balance sheet - you can see our most recent financial statement here

Why is the amount of the member guarantee $10.00?

This is a nominal sum and one we hope we never need call upon. However, as we are a company limited by guarantee, under Australian corporations' law, we must be able to call on members to repay liabilities in the event of the company entering insolvency. Given our operations and membership, the sum of $10.00 was deemed appropriate by the Board and is set out in the auDA constitution.

Must all .au members transition?

There is no obligation on members to transition.

auDA hopes all members will consider transitioning to the new member model. If you’d like to discuss transition, please feel free to contact us at membership@auda.org.au.

Under the Constitution, members who do not opt into transition will cease to be members and will not be eligible to receive auDA member benefits after 27 September 2022.

When is the deadline for transition?

.au members who opt to transition to the new membership model must do so prior to 4pm AEST, September 27, 2022. Transitioning is easy and can be done online via a unique link that will be sent to members during January 2022.

Under the Constitution, after 27 September 2022, members who do not opt into transition to the new membership model will no longer be .au members and will not be eligible to receive auDA member benefits after 27 September 2022.

What if I miss the transition date but still wish to be a .au member?

Any member who misses the transition date (27 September 2022) and does not opt in to transition to the new member model by this date, will cease to be .au member.

Anyone who wishes to later join (or re-join) can do so. au membership will remain complimentary to those who wish to join.

Why are you asking members to opt-in to the new terms and conditions now, if transition does not occur until 27 September?

Transitioning over 4,000 members is a significant undertaking, as is developing and growing a diverse membership in line with out 2021-2025 Strategic Plan and updated Terms of Endorsement.

It is an extensive process that we will be working on throughout the year to ensure as many members as possible make the transition and are able to take advantage of the new suit of benefits and services available to members.
