Notification of change of operation for the edu.au domain name space
In 2002, the Ministerial Council for Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA), the Australian Vice Chancellor’s Committee (AVCC), and the .au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA) agreed that the policy and registrar function for the edu.au domain would be transferred to authorities representing the interests of the Australian education and training community.
MCEETYA agreed that the Australian Information and Communications Technology in Education Committee (AICTEC) would develop policy on behalf of the education and training community through its edu.au Domain Administration Committee (eDAC) to protect the integrity of the edu.au domain name space.
education.au limited was appointed as the Registrar for the edu.au domain. education.au limited is a not-for-profit company owned by Australian Education and Training Ministers in Australia. As Registrar, education.au limited will provide domain name services in the edu.au domain name space and administer policies on behalf of the education and training sector.
Further information and background to these decisions is available through the AICTEC web site.
From 12 noon on Friday 6 June 2003 AUNIC and auDA will cease to process applications for the edu.au domain name space while the transfer to the new arrangements is made.
From Thursday 12 June 2003 education.au limited will assume the position of Registrar and begin processing applications for eligibility in the edu.au domain name space. Applications for new domain names or changes to existing registration details can be made online at www.domainname.edu.au.
As part of the MCEETYA decision, all existing domain names at the third and fourth level in the edu.au domain name space will be granted a licence until May 2004. All new applications processed on or after 12 June 2003 will be issued with a two year licence and will incur a cost which will assist in supporting the edu.au domain as a closed domain.
