Major Disaster Policy FAQ

What is the temporary Major Disaster Policy?

auDA’s temporary Major Disaster Policy gives registrants residing in areas affected by the recent Australian bushfires:

  • an additional two months to renew any eligible .au domain name licences they hold
  • two months to respond to complaints about their .au domains lodged between 22 Jan and 1 March 2020

The policy can be found here: 2020-01 Major Disaster Policy (temporary)

The policy applies to .au domain name registrants who live or conduct business in any local government areas (LGAs) that have been declared natural disaster zones in December 2019 and January 2020 under the Social Security Act 1991 (Cth).

A list of postcodes of bushfire-affected areas can be found below.

Names eligible for an extended renewal period are those with an expiry date of between 22 January 2020 and 1 March 2020.

The extended response period applies to complaints lodged against eligible registrants from 22 January and on or before 1 March 2020.

How will the policy be applied?

The extension will automatically be applied to names where the registrant contact information in the registry contains a postcode of an area in a bushfire-affected LGA.

Where the registrant contact address is outside a bushfire-affected LGA or incorrect, but the registrant resides in one, the registrant can apply for the renewal extension as it won’t be automatically applied.

Applications for the renewal extension can be lodged via the general enquiry form on auDA’s website.

When does the policy come into effect?

The policy was approved by the auDA Board via circular resolution on 17/01/2020 and takes effect on 22/01/2020

Why is auDA doing this?

Registrants in bushfire-affected areas are under enough stress without having to worry about renewing their .au domain name, or responding to an eligibility complaint.

Domain names are a vital part of an individual’s or organisation’s operations, powering websites, emails and other essential services they use or deliver. If an individual’s or organisation’s domain name is not renewed and expires, it can have a major impact on an individual’s or organisation’s operations and be costly to fix.

How was this policy developed?

This policy was developed by auDA. Due to the extraordinary nature of these bushfires and the need for a rapid implementation, auDA has was not able to conduct the normal public consultation phase of the policy development process. Instead, auDA has liaised directly with the Department of Communications and the Arts, the registry operator, and auDA-accredited registrars to ensure that the policy could be implemented in a way that provides the best outcome for registrants, and the internet users they interact with.
