In Development: Second Level .au Domains
Shorter, simpler .au domain names - like forexample.au – will soon be available as an option for registration by Australian internet users.
These names are known as ‘second level' domains as they sit at the level below '.au' which is the county code top level domain for Australia. They are also sometimes referred to as being in the .au namespace (other namespaces are com.au, org.au etc.). Registering names at the second level is also sometimes referred to as ‘direct registration’.
Second level names function in exactly the same way as domain names in the com.au, net.au, org.au, id.au and asn.au namespaces – except with the benefit of being shorter and available to everyone with an Australian presence.
Second level domains will be a new added option for Australian registrants. The com.au, net.au, org.au, id.au, asn.au options you’re used to will still work and be available to register as usual.
Second level .au domain names are expected to launch in 2020.
